Week 3

Week 3

Maps

For this weeks activity, we were asked to create a map for our chosen place. We could create it in any way, a very open brief to explore. As someone who is inexperienced and otherwise unbothered with making maps, this task started off with difficulty. I didn't have any interesting ideas, and so started off with the basics of a normal map of Monaco. I looked particularly into tourist maps, as I know the main landmarks and streets would be on those maps, and they were more likely to be in English than in French! While drawing this out and really observing maps of Monaco did help, I knew I wanted to do something different and fun rather than basic and boring, so I went back to my research to gather some ideas.

Looking through my research from before, I decided to research more into the environment (landmarks etc), culture and society of Monaco. From this, I gained a few fun ideas based on the ideas of Monaco being a 'Playground for the rich and famous". I had started with the idea of creating a map based off of a gambling game, or gambling table, to represent their gambling culture and impressive casinos/landmarks. However, I found this difficult to design, so I looked more into games and what could be fun to link with these ideas. I then came up with the idea of monopoly, a game based off of money, real estate, business, society, chance, and strategy. I found this board game matched almost perfectly, and decided to create this. When designing this board, I focused on the main streets, landmarks, social events/activities, and stations that express Monaco as a whole, of which I feel I did a good job of including.

If I were to change or develop this further, I would clean up the board as a whole, possibly doing it digitally, and would be more particular on where everything goes, as to make it more of a map then a game. Overall, I am really happy with how this came out as a whole.
