Editorial Thumbnail Development

Looking towards my magazine cover, I started by trying to decide how I would like to draw the tiger. After my research and looking through my mood board, I knew to pose I wanted to do. However, how I painted him and with what brush on Procreate was the true question for me. I tried these three brushes to the left, and quickly decided on the gouache brush. I feel it suits the tiger more to match the line work, and gives a soft gradient without having to get the smudge tool involved.

After deciding this, I started designing some developed dripping sketch thumbnail designs. I began with what I did before in the thumbnail, with the simple dripping design. Im really happy with this design, I believe it's beautiful with its simple line work, yet the colour palette I feel makes the tiger stand out. Whilst designing the drips falling down the podium, I realised that the design started to resemble a tree stump. Quickly changing the podium as soon as the idea came to mind, I think it makes the piece pull in altogether perfectly. I still believe it could use some work, the drips looking off in some way but overall I'm really happy with this outcome.

For the second design, I created the development idea I listed previously. I wanted to try and express the loss of Tigers by making the dripping suck out all of colour from the Tiger, showing some type of loss. While I do really like the idea, I feel it is a design I would need a lot of time to get correct and unfortunately I don't have the time. This is definitely something I will keep in mind for future reference, as I need to work on my time management.

For the last design, I wanted to try and play on the lighting, especially as the Tiger is stood on a podium type space. Whilst this is also an idea I originally liked, I found the execution not nearly as nice as I thought it would be. I think with some more time and work put in, it could really work nicely. However, I don't feel anything very strongly about this piece and also feel it pulls away from the original proposition.
