Editorial Cover

Editorial Cover Ideas These are my final designs and final pieces! I'm so proud of this work, as I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and found a good level of professionalism where I could create quality work without being overly attached/sentimental about the work. I would develop this more with more colour ideas if given the opportunity, but I am overall really happy with my outcome. In the end, I went with the headline 'Save the Stripes' as I feel its short and snappy but quickly gets the message across, whilst catching peoples attention. I chose the line below as I wanted to create some sentiment with power. Although I do wish I had considered this line more, I am content with the outcome.

Editorial spot illustrations

Editorial Spot Illustrations These are my final spot illustrations that I decided to keep. Im overall really happy with how they all came out. I do believe I could have developed this work far more than I did, however I am proud of myself for pushing myself out of my comfort zone to try something more difficult and perosonal to me.  If I could do anything differently for these, I would definitely add more to the bullets and develop the far right tiger design more to suit the project. I feel it is plain in comparison to the others, but am happy I at least powered through my art block and managed to design it.

Editorial Spot Illustrations

Editorial Spot Illustrations Design ideas For my spot illustrations, I had one main idea from the beginning. I liked the idea of one of my thumbnails, a sketch of a hunting rifle's ammo being laid out. Designing it somewhat realistically to match the actual ammo was fun and challenging to do, as I wanted the style to match the cover idea as to all blend in. Im really happy with how they came out, although I would definitely develop them more if given the opportunity by adding details that show they are hunting ammo. The second idea I had was also based off of a thumbnail I created originally, a sketch with the dollar sign symbol involved. Unfortunately I lost the work showing that particular piece, however I managed to redo some of the ideas below. I decided to do one with arrows pointing through the body shape, as I originally believed it would help shape the dollar sign more. However, I quickly realised that didn't work, but decided to keep it as a back up anyways. I also des...

Editorial Development

Image
Editorial Thumbnail Development Looking towards my magazine cover, I started by trying to decide how I would like to draw the tiger. After my research and looking through my mood board, I knew to pose I wanted to do. However, how I painted him and with what brush on Procreate was the true question for me. I tried these three brushes to the left, and quickly decided on the gouache brush. I feel it suits the tiger more to match the line work, and gives a soft gradient without having to get the smudge tool involved. After deciding this, I started designing some developed dripping sketch thumbnail designs. I began with what I did before in the thumbnail, with the simple dripping design. Im really happy with this design, I believe it's beautiful with its simple line work, yet the colour palette I feel makes the tiger stand out. Whilst designing the drips falling down the podium, I realised that the design started to resemble a tree stump. Quickly changing the podium as soon as the idea ...

Editorial Research Update

Image
Editorial Research Update A small update from the last research post but I have been looking into Tiger anatomy, and trying to familiarise myself with how a tiger, or large feline's, body functions. I found this all very interesting, as I have a fond liking to animals and their anatomy as it is. I found this research very useful, as I believe a deeper understanding of how the animal I am drawing functions, and why, will help be draw the animal correctly and give it character.  Along with this, I also invested into looking into documentaries of Tigers, and how they live in the wild. I particularly looked into 'Planet Earth' and 'Our Planet' on Netflix, the Sir David Attenborough documentaries that talk about Tigers quite a bit. This helped me to see what I was learning about Tiger anatomy, and to learn a tiger's life helped me to understand their traits, overall helping me design a tiger with life.

Editorial Artist research

Image
Editorial Artist Research I have taken a lot of inspiration from Instagram artists for this work, as I find artists on instagram are very unique and creative. I have chosen a few to put into here for my research, the main two being below. Momiji95 There isn't much information on this artist on their social media or website unfortunately, so there isn't anything I can say about the artist themselves. This artists work, specifically the work to left, has been really inspiring for me. I love not only the art style and overall aesthetic of their work, but the technique and clear decisions made for this work has really inspired me for my cover.  I especially love the detail in the line drawings and colour palette chosen for the tiger piece. I think all of this, along with the pose chosen for the tiger makes for a beautiful, powerful piece of work.  I will definitely be taking inspiration from the line techniques the artist has used, it being similar to my style and really suiting t...

Editorial thumbnails

Image
Editorial Thumbnails For my thumbnails, I looked specifically into tigers and how I can portray poaching and/or animal extinction through a cover for a magazine. I started with looking into a large variety of different reference photos for tigers, as to get an idea of Tiger anatomy and get composition ideas.  I also briefly looked at other endangered animals, alike elephants and rhinos, although I decided quickly I wanted to stick with Tigers. I am happy I tried different animals, just in case I decided to try different things. Out of all of my thumbnails, I have highlighted the ones I feel I will consider taking forward to develop. I particularly like the one with the stripes dripping off onto the podium and the one on the top left (bottom page), with the tiger skull. I think they are both very eye catching, especially the dripping stripes sketch.  I made sure to make a list of ideas for the dripping sketch, for development. Whilst I don't think I will try all of the ideas I ...

Editorial Research Update

Image
Editorial Research Update I have looked more into Animal extinction, and specifically Tigers as I wish to move forward with this project focusing on Tigers. I feel they are a very popular and well respected animal that people can relate and feel for.

Article Task

Image
Article Task For this task, we were asked to choose an article and create spot sketches that represents important sections. I chose this article as I felt I could have a lot of leway with my sketches, and could do multiple different spot illustrations.  I really like how all of these sketches came out, as I feel they all represent the certain sections of this article they belong to well. I particularly like the two far right sketches. I feel the small silhouette represents loneliness really well, and is easy the most powerful image on the page. The body being twisted at the bottom is also one of my favourites, as I feel it's very detailed and is powerful as an image to represent self esteem.  I would develop some of these images further by adding more colour and inking them in, to make them stand out more. I would also redo my 'mood' sketch, as I feel it doesn't fit the page and doesn't work how I thought it would.

Editorial Initial Research

Image
Editorial Research Initial research For my initial research, I used the small book handed to us in our lecture. I found this really useful as it helped set my mind onto what exactly I needed to look into, and helped give me inspiration for what to look into.  I began with looking into animal extinction as a whole, looking for the causes and effects, and specific statistics that would help put the reality of the issue into place.  I also began thinking about my proposition and audience with the knowledge I have gained. At the moment I would like to focus on the causes of Tiger extinction, specifically poaching. I feel my target audience will be adults, as I would like to use my art style to create darker imagery, and so it will not be suitable for younger audiences. I also looked into key words that would help me define my proposition idea, the main three being extinction, poaching and greed. With this, I took greed and poaching forward to draw some sketches that I think of whe...

Editorial Brief Intro

Image
Editorial introduction Brief initial ideas When first given this brief, I considered many different topics I could go into. Many of the topics I looked into, alike Women's rights and Mental Health, are very big and powerful topics that I am passionate about. However, looking through all of my initial ideas I knew I needed to be careful, as I didn't want to choose a topic that could potentially upset me, or other people.  So, I decided to follow through with the Animal Extinction idea, specifically to do with poaching. I chose this as it is a relevant topic that I am very passionate about, but I am also more comfortable diving into. My next steps are to really research into my subject idea, and start thumb nailing some ideas.
